COMPOSITES

A composite, or a filling, restores teeth damaged by decay.

When a cavity causes damage to a tooth or when there is severe sensitivity, a filling may be the appropriate course of treatment. At Sandy Dental we use resin composites, which are tooth-colored fillings, to restore decayed or damaged teeth. Unlike traditional metal amalgam fillings, resin composites are designed to blend in with the natural color of the teeth.

Resin composites are available in a wide range of shades to match the color of the surrounding teeth. The material is applied in layers and cured, or hardened, with a special light after each layer is placed.

In addition to their aesthetic benefits, resin composites also offer several other advantages over metal fillings. They require less removal of healthy tooth structure to prepare the tooth for the filling, and can help to strengthen the tooth by bonding directly to the tooth structure. They also do not contain any mercury.

While resin composites are a popular choice for restoring teeth, they may not be appropriate for all cases. Patients with large or deep cavities may require a different course of treatment, such as a crown or an inlay/onlay. The best treatment option for the patient's individual needs will be determined during their first appointment.
